it's totally normal to not update for two years and then have your first post be about dworkin [Sep. 22nd, 2009|11:15 am]
So in con law II this morning we were discussing obscenity laws, and moved on to feminist anti-pornography laws inspired by the works of Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon. I kept waiting for the discussion to devolve into "dworkin's fucking insane," which is what I'm used to, and it didn't! We just soberly assessed the anti-violence and anti-degradation rationale behind the Dworkin-MacKinnon laws, compared it to the anti-violence rationale used to justify the Miller test for obscenity, and questioned why there was a difference in doctrine.

Sometimes my colleagues aren't raging, terrible sexists, like they were when we discussed rape in criminal law! Yay!

Seriously, the day we talked about rape in crim law, I hated my classmates so much for their victim-blaming shit. It was nice that nobody beat up on strawman-dworkin today.

[music |Aimee Mann - Ghost World]

God, it's just one thing after afuckingnother. I accidentally switched on the interior lights in my car when I got home this afternoon, and ran down the battery. I'm getting it charged right now, but it's just a pain in the ass. Fucking brakes went out two days ago. I HATE MY CAR SO MUCH.

On the plus side, my scary Christian neighbor told me that my apartment's apparently already been secured with a previous tenant, so I'm definitely getting half of May's rent back. That's BEER MONEY imo. And video game money probably.

I'm starting up the Sims 2 again. I only have the university expansion, but it was decently fun back when I played it. I just got tired after a while of micromanaging a bunch of people and trying to maintain fifteen friendships. It didn't help that the sim I focused the most on had a romance aspiration, which... guh!

Anyway, I figure it'll help kill some of my extra free time until the semester ends.

I <3 rozerem [Apr. 11th, 2007|01:29 pm]
[music |Sublime - What I Got]

Oh. Em. Gee. I asked for a prescription to rozerem more or less on a whim while I was getting a prozac scrip from my doctor a couple weeks ago, but I didn't really think it'd be lifechanging. I'd just, you know, have something to fall back on when I can't get to sleep until 5:30 in the morning and end up missing class the next day or running on just a few hours of sleep.

I've been falling asleep between 11:30 pm and 1:00 am every night, consistently. I just take a rozerem tab if I don't feel tired by midnight. I get up in the morning, piddle around the apartment for a while, and then I go in for an early lunch on campus, read (perfectly awake and rested) for a couple hours in the library, and then I go to class. I've been getting way ahead on my reading, so that by the end of the semester, at this rate, I'll have finished all my reading for class weeks in advance and I'll (hopefully) be using my time between eating and class to have written my final papers in advance of their due dates.

I got so used to, from high school onwards, running on a bare minimum of sleep and rushing everything at the last minute, that this is just an entirely new experience for me. I finish class in the afternoon without feeling guilty about how much I still have to do later in the day, and even guiltier at the end of the day as I've continually put off doing any of it. I've got clearly partitioned time in the morning, and I simply work until I'm done at the end of class. I had some lingering worries about law school before now, because while I was confident I could get all the work done (under my old model of rushing at the last minute, with the immense pressure of necessity driving me), I was concerned it'd completely tear me apart with guilt and stress. With this structure, though... good god. I could have had a four point as an undergrad, probably.

The awesome part is that I don't even have to take it every night. I just use the rozerem as a supplemental and it keeps my sleep schedule totally regular. I haven't used my fucking alarm in a week (which is INSANE for me -- I was driven completely by my alarm before this), because I just fall asleep at midnight, wake up whenever I'm not sleepy anymore (about 8.5 hours later on average), and then just kill time checking the news and blogs until about 10:20, when I leave for lunch at 10:30 on campus.

Words cannot describe how happy I've been with the last couple weeks. I mean, the prozac is probably slowly working up my seratonin levels as well, but I think rozerem is responsible for the lion's share of my contentment right now.
